The youth population of Benue State represents the state's greatest asset, yet young people remain largely marginalised in the political process. While they constitute the majority of the voting population, their representation in elective and appointive positions is disproportionately low. This disconnect between youth demographics and political participation must be addressed if the state is to achieve its development potential.
Young people in Benue State must move beyond being used as political tools during election seasons and begin to assert themselves as serious stakeholders in governance. This requires a shift in mindset from viewing politics as the exclusive preserve of the wealthy and the elderly. Youth organisations and civil society groups have a critical role to play in civic education, leadership development, and political mentorship.
The recent successes of young candidates in various elections across Nigeria demonstrate that the political landscape is changing. Benue's youth must seize this moment to organise, strategise, and position themselves for leadership roles at all levels of government. The future of the state literally depends on it.
