Communities along the Benue River are raising alarm over the increasing levels of pollution in the waterway that serves as the primary source of water for millions of people. Residents of riverine communities in Makurdi, Guma, and Agatu report that the river water, which they depend on for drinking, cooking, and irrigation, has become visibly polluted with industrial waste, sewage, and plastic debris.
Environmental testing conducted by researchers from Benue State University confirms high levels of heavy metals, bacteria, and other contaminants in water samples taken from several points along the river. The researchers warned that continued consumption of untreated water from the river poses serious health risks, particularly for children and the elderly.
Community leaders have written to the state government and the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency demanding immediate action. They are calling for the identification and prosecution of polluters, the establishment of water treatment facilities in affected communities, and a comprehensive clean-up of the river. Environmental activists have also launched a social media campaign to draw national attention to the crisis.
