A major reforestation initiative in Benue State has reached a significant milestone with the planting of its 50,000th tree. The project, which is being implemented in partnership with international environmental organisations and local community groups, aims to restore degraded forest lands and combat the effects of climate change in the state.
Tree planting activities have been concentrated in areas most affected by deforestation, including parts of Ushongo, Kwande, and Vandeikya local government areas. The project uses indigenous tree species that are well adapted to the local climate and soil conditions, ensuring high survival rates and long-term sustainability.
Environmental experts have praised the initiative, noting that it not only helps to sequester carbon and reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also provides economic benefits to participating communities through the production of fruits, timber, and non-timber forest products. The project organisers have set an ambitious target of planting one million trees across the state within the next five years.
