The community policing initiative launched in Otukpo local government area six months ago is already yielding positive results, according to the Divisional Police Officer. Crime rates in the area have dropped by over 40 percent since the programme was introduced, with particular improvements in cases of theft, burglary, and cultism.
The initiative involves the collaboration of local vigilante groups, traditional rulers, and the Nigeria Police Force. Community leaders have been trained in basic security awareness and conflict resolution techniques, enabling them to serve as first responders in their neighbourhoods.
The DPO commended the residents of Otukpo for their cooperation and urged other local government areas in Benue State to adopt similar community policing models. Plans are underway to extend the programme to Ado and Okpokwu LGAs.
